Green IT, Did you know about it ?

Find out now about the environmental impact of digital!

It’s better to send one email to 1,000 people than 1,000 emails to just one person.

In fact, an email you send to a colleague sitting right next to you will travel an average of 15,000 km through servers before it is delivered.

Contrary to what one might think, digital technology—as intangible as it may be—consumes energy. The exponential growth in its use leads to high energy demand and pollution. In light of Responsible Digital Month, which takes place every March, let’s explore together the hidden impact of our use of digital tools and the solutions that are available.

The manufacturing of our devices accounts for 80% of their carbon footprint, while their use accounts for 20%. Indeed, the production and transportation phases are highly polluting due to mineral extraction and the increasing number of components required. According to ADEME (the French Environment and Energy Management Agency), a laptop requires approximately 800 kg of raw materials—350 times its own weight!

Consequently, a responsible digital policy begins with the purchase of equipment and focuses primarily on extending its lifespan. This can involve improving usage practices, enhancing maintenance, or purchasing refurbished equipment. Certifications such as the Energy Star label for more energy-efficient equipment can also help.

Once you’ve bought and maintained the right equipment, you can reduce your digital footprint by adopting some new habits!
